You might have noticed that recently there is more and more companies offering some sort of employee wellness program. I applaud that idea, knowing that our sedentary lives can have the same impact on our cardiovascular system as smoking. ( Yeah, I know shocking. So being active throughout the day can have a huge impact on your health.

When I say I teach corporate yoga classes I get a mix of looks. Some are a little bewildered, some are rather excited and want to know more. Those who practice yoga understand the benefits of corporate yoga right away.

There have been several studies done showing that when a person is given the opportunity to be physical and mentally healthier, they’re not only going to be more productive at work, they will be happier at work and they will actually show up. A recent study showed a 5-11% increase in productivity. (

Corporate wellness program can help attract new employees in a competitive job market. Some employees might review the benefit packages offered by different companies and be attracted to the organization with the wellness program. These programs not only appear to be attractive to job seekers, they are also very popular with the existing employees, because they show that their employer cares about their health, they imply a better organizational culture and an attempt at implementing a work-life balance.

There are numerous studies showing how healthcare cost decline when employees are offered a wellness program at work. The absenteeism numbers drop as well, creating more consistency in the quality of work, less cost to the employer having to find short term replacements, or paying overtime. Voluntary attrition numbers are going down as well, as the morale and the camaraderie improves. (
